Italian authorities continue to combat a wave of theft, robbery, and fraud, with a persistent focus on scams targeting the elderly through impersonation. In Udine, a man was arrested after a fake marshal claimed a victim’s car was involved in a jewelry heist to solicit gold. In Cassino, a 31-year-old woman was apprehended after an off-duty officer intervened during a similar attempt to defraud an elderly woman. In Torregrotta, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were arrested following a robbery and fraud targeting an 85-year-old woman. Recent reports highlight further impersonation schemes in Sorrento and Monterotondo, alongside financial scams involving bank impersonation and fake investment applications. Newer operations have targeted violent robberies and gold thefts. In Novara, a 43-year-old man was arrested at Roma Termini station for using a ‘fake carabiniere’ scam to rob an elderly couple; the suspects allegedly used threatening phone calls to facilitate the home invasion, during which the victims were physically assaulted. Police recovered 24 gold items and a Beretta pistol. In Turin, an 18-year-old and a 30-year-old were arrested in the Aurora district for snatching gold necklaces, sometimes using scooters. Financial fraud has also evolved through sophisticated digital manipulation. In Mantova, the Postal Police charged six individuals for a scam using ‘spoofing’ techniques to mimic official police calls, resulting in losses exceeding 30,000 euros. Additionally, in Ravenna, the Financial Banking Ombudsman ordered a bank to reimburse a customer after an unauthorized 1,100-euro transfer occurred while the account holder was asleep, citing a failure in ‘strong authentication’ protocols. Recent enforcement actions include the arrest of two men in Ausonia following a high-speed pursuit; the pair allegedly used deceptive calls regarding a relative’s debts to solicit cash and gold. In Fano, scammers impersonating Carabinieri officers defrauded a 72-year-old woman of 100,000 euros in gold and jewelry.
