Criminal convictions and violent crime in Arica

Overview

Legal proceedings in Arica, Chile, have resulted in several convictions for violent crimes. In August 2026, two inmates from the ‘Los Gallegos’ criminal organization, Willmer García Malafito and William Isaac Celas Garrido, were convicted of terrorist conspiracy. The pair had planned to use car bombs to attack judicial buildings, including the Guarantee Court and the Oral Criminal Court, in retaliation for previous prosecutions. Both received sentences of 301 days of effective imprisonment.

In September 2026, the Oral Criminal Court of Arica sentenced Matías Felipe Gálvez Escobar to seven years of imprisonment for the attempted murder of an individual in December 2022. The court found that the defendant, armed and wearing a tactical vest, entered a residence and shot the victim in the abdomen and lower extremities.
