Police in Bhubaneswar have conducted several investigations into violent and predatory crimes. In early October, authorities investigated the sexual assault of a 26-year-old engineer who was allegedly raped at gunpoint in her Nayapalli apartment. Following a review of CCTV footage, police detained a suspect and stated they had obtained “vital clues” regarding the incident. Later in the month, police arrested two men for separate offenses. One individual, a potato trader, was apprehended for allegedly blackmailing a minor with obscene images and videos. A second arrest involved a 55-year-old man accused of bigamy and domestic abuse, having allegedly married and abused four different women while concealing his first marriage. By late October, investigations expanded to include new forms of exploitation. Authorities launched a probe into an incident where a 14-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly blackmailed using AI-generated obscene photographs. The suspect, identified as Shubham Mahapatra, reportedly used the manipulated images to extort gold ornaments worth approximately Rs 6 lakh from the minor. In a separate case, the Bhubaneswar Mahila Police arrested a former security guard in Kataka for alleged sexual exploitation. The victim reported that the man entered into a physical relationship with her under the false pretext of marriage for nearly two years. After the accused attempted to end the relationship when pressured to marry, the victim filed a formal complaint. The suspect has been forwarded to a local court and sent to judicial custody.
