Criminal justice and violence in Brazil
Overview
Investigations into the Brazilian justice system have highlighted how systemic delays can prolong violence and obscure connections between state agents and organized crime. Research into ‘milicianos’ (militia members) suggests that law enforcement officers have transitioned into serving criminal interests, including arms trafficking and the ‘jogo do bicho’.
Recent judicial activity has resulted in various criminal convictions and violent incidents across several states. In São José do Rio Preto, a former teacher was convicted for mistreating students at a daycare center; following a review of security footage from June 2024 showing excessive force against children aged 3 to 4, the court issued a sentence of eight months of detention in an open regime, which was replaced by a fine.
Femicide cases have reached significant milestones, including a 30-year sentence for the murder of an ex-partner in Feira de Santana and a 28-year sentence for attempted femicide in Contagem. In the Distrito Federal, a suspect's arrest was converted to preventive detention following a public killing, while in São Luís, a young woman died following complications from an assault by her ex-partner.
Other notable legal developments include a 20-year prison sentence for a stepmother convicted of sexual abuse in a case involving her stepdaughter. In Sousa, police are investigating whether a teenager acted in self-defense after killing his stepfather to protect his mother. Additionally, police in Tarauacá, Acre, executed five arrest warrants during a crime-fighting operation, and in Anadia, the trial for the 2011 murder of a city councilman has been postponed to November.
