Criminal sentencing for nitrous oxide trade in Netherlands

Overview

A 26-year-old man from Veldhoven was sentenced to 24 months in prison, including a six-month suspended sentence, for the large-scale illegal trade of nitrous oxide. The court in Oost-Brabant ordered the defendant to repay more than 897,000 euros in profits earned from the activity.

Investigations showed the individual, working with others, stored roughly 646 kilograms of the substance across two locations between 2024 and 2025, despite laws criminalizing its possession and transport since January 2023. The court cited the defendant’s prior convictions and his decision to continue trading while on probation as aggravating factors. The ruling also noted the societal and environmental impacts of the substance, such as potential nervous system damage and littering from empty cylinders.
