Criminal sentencing for violent crimes in Southern Africa

Overview

Legal proceedings in Southern Africa have resulted in several significant prison sentences for violent crimes, including murder, sexual assault, and kidnapping.

In South Africa, Lucas Kgosi Mmakgathi received 25 years for the 2024 murder of his two-year-old son via strangulation. The Madikwe Regional Court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and stipulated that he cannot be released on parole without permission from the deceased’s family. Additionally, Bhutan Sizwe Mlotshwa was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Thembisa Magistrates’ Court for rape, alongside sentences for attempted murder, kidnapping, and violating the Immigration Act following the prolonged abuse of his partner.

In Namibia, Jacobus Gawaseb was sentenced to 22 years for the murder of his pregnant girlfriend, Fransiska Naobes, following an assault involving a knobkierie. A judge noted the sentence addressed “widespread public outrage regarding domestic murders.”

Judicial actions in Zimbabwe and Lesotho have also addressed severe violence. Nkululeko Moyo was sentenced to 17 years in Zimbabwe for twice raping a woman. In Zimbabwe, a 31-year-old man from Hurungwe received eight years for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl. In Lesotho, Moruti Mapola received a 30-year sentence for the murder of Tšeliso Chabalala following a fatal confrontation involving 14 stab wounds.
