Criminal sentencing in Moldova and Romania
Overview
Legal proceedings in the region have resulted in various prison sentences for violent and high-risk crimes.
In Moldova, the North Appeal Court upheld 20-year prison sentences for two men convicted of the murder of Vasilii Rotari in the Soroca district. The court maintained the original ruling of murder committed with extreme cruelty, rejecting defense attempts for lighter sentences. The court also increased moral damages awarded to the victim’s family to 500,000 lei each.
In Romania, separate rulings were issued for different offenses. In Iași, Marcelone Bălan received a final sentence of 16 years and 10 months for high-risk drug trafficking and unauthorized psychoactive substance operations. Additionally, a 21-year-old man from Vulcan was sentenced to six years in prison for the attempted murder of a 16-year-old following a conflict in May 2024.
