Criminal targeting of elderly citizens in Czech Republic
Overview
Authorities in the Czech Republic have reported separate incidents involving criminal groups targeting elderly citizens through deception.
In Prague, police are searching for a suspect who defrauded two seniors of gold bars valued at approximately 4.8 million CZK. The perpetrator allegedly posed as a relative over the phone, claiming a family emergency required immediate funds. The victim provided 2.9 kilograms of gold to a courier, which was later found to have been cut into smaller pieces to facilitate black market resale.
In the Moravian-Silesian Region, police dismantled a group that used fake assistance to exploit seniors. A 43-year-old woman and two male accomplices allegedly gained victims' trust by offering to carry shopping or escort them home, allowing them to steal wallets, phones, and other personal items. This group is linked to approximately twenty thefts totaling 150,000 CZK. While two suspects are in custody, one remains at large.
