Researchers at Kindred Companion Sciences have utilized CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology to develop hypoallergenic beagles named Alfie and Bailey. The process involved deactivating the gene responsible for the Can f 1 protein, a primary allergen found in canine saliva, dander, and fur. Following the modification of skin cells and subsequent embryo creation via nuclear transfer, the beagles were born in September 2024. The genetic modification specifically utilized a 1-bp insertion to cause a frameshift mutation in exon 1 of the Can f 1 gene, preventing the production of the allergen. Testing has indicated that the dogs produce undetectable levels of the Can f 1 protein. In preliminary testing, a geneticist with dog allergies showed no reaction to samples from the modified beagles, whereas they reacted to samples from other breeds. This development offers a potential gene-based alternative to traditional allergen immunotherapy. While the development is considered a milestone, experts highlight that the deactivated gene is not the sole cause of canine allergies. Dr. Jeff SoRelle of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center noted that further testing with more people is necessary to determine effectiveness and monitor the long-term health of the animals. Additionally, specialists have raised concerns regarding how the commercialization of genetically modified pets might affect animal shelters and rescue organizations.
