Croatia has initiated a major railway reconstruction project on the Hrvatski Leskovac – Karlovac section to improve the connection between Karlovac and Zagreb. HŽ Infrastruktura contracted the Spanish company Comsa S.A. for the work, which is valued at 348.5 million euros. The scope of the project includes reconstructing existing tracks, adding a second track, electrification, and building new bridges and viaducts. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2029, the project aims to allow train speeds of up to 160 km/h on the 44-kilometer stretch, potentially reducing travel time between the two cities to 20 minutes. This effort is part of a wider initiative to modernize the railway corridor connecting Zagreb and Rijeka. As of August 2026, construction has officially begun on the second track for the Hrvatski Leskovac – Karlovac line.
