Croatia has been identified as the most expensive European holiday destination for August 2026. A Dutch analysis by Vind Vakantie Deals found average prices in Croatia reached €1,077, surpassing Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Spain. Domestic trends reflect these rising costs. Data from Alma Career Croatia indicates that 32% of employees do not plan to vacation this summer, an increase from 27% the previous year, with 60% of those non-travelers citing financial constraints. Analysts note that the cost of summer holidays in Croatia has nearly doubled over the last five years. Vacation habits are shifting toward shorter durations; 21% of respondents plan to use seven days or fewer of annual leave, up from 15% previously, while those planning 21 days or more have dropped to 3%. While 56% of surveyed employees prefer staying within Croatia, interest in traveling abroad has fallen from 21% to 17%. Broader economic data from Eurostat provides context on affordability. In 2025, 32.6% of Croatians aged 16 and older were unable to afford a one-week holiday. While this remains high, it marks a significant improvement from 2015, when 65.8% faced similar barriers—the largest reduction among EU member states. This shift moved Croatia from the second-worst position in the bloc to seventh. However, economic disparities persist: 62.6% of single-person households aged 65 and older could not afford a week-long holiday, and 33.1% of families with three or more children reported the same limitation. Rising regional prices have also sparked debate among diaspora workers. One individual reported spending nearly 4,000 euros on a three-week trip to Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, noting a sharp contrast between holiday spending and monthly living expenses in Germany. This has led to public disagreement over whether high costs stem from regional inflation or personal spending habits.
