Croatian literary funding dispute
Overview
Writer and journalist Miljenko Jergović has accused the Croatian Minister of Culture and Media, Nina Obuljen Koržinek, of using discretionary power to remove his book, ‘Rat’, from a list of works eligible for state stimulation grants.
Jergović alleged that an expert commission had originally selected his book as one of 30 works to receive a 2,000 euro grant, but claimed the Minister struck his name to replace it with another author. He suggested the decision was a form of punishment for his previous public opposition to threatening graffiti on his building.
The Ministry has defended its actions, stating that the Minister does not exclude dissenters and noting that Jergović has previously received various forms of support, such as foreign translation grants and book buybacks by national libraries.
