Croatian retiree financial and pension policy concerns

Discussions regarding the financial stability and income of Croatian retirees have focused on upcoming policy changes and individual payout strategies.

Milivoj Špika, president of the Bloc Retirees Together (BUZ), expressed concerns that the abolition of pension tax, set for January 1, 2027, may fail to benefit most retirees. He estimated that 700,000 retirees with pensions below 600 euros would see no gain, while those earning between 600 and 800 euros might only see an average increase of ten euros. Špika also warned that local governments might offset lost tax revenue by increasing communal service fees, such as waste disposal.

In a separate analysis of retirement planning, mathematician Toni Milun highlighted the risks associated with different pension payout models. Using a case study, Milun demonstrated that selecting an unfavorable model could result in a monthly loss of 47 euros. He advised citizens to carefully evaluate options, such as the choice between a combined pension or transferring funds from the second pillar to the first, to avoid living on insufficient monthly amounts.
