Cruise trends and maritime decarbonization efforts

The cruise industry is increasingly focusing on seasonal expansion and specialized travel experiences. In Crotone, Italy, port activity is extending beyond the traditional summer season, with multiple ship arrivals scheduled through September 2026. This movement aims to promote ‘destagionalizzazione’ (de-seasonalization) by utilizing the region’s cultural and archaeological assets to maintain economic continuity. In Messina, the port recently demonstrated this capacity by hosting three simultaneous cruise ships, bringing over 9,000 passengers and crew to the city.

Beyond seasonal diversification, the industry is also seeing a rise in ‘astrotourism.’ Cruise lines, such as Costa Crociere, are integrating celestial events, such as meteor showers and eclipses, into their itineraries to meet growing demand for niche, experiential maritime travel.

Regarding the broader maritime sector, a strategic report by TEHA Group, Edison, and NextChem highlights the massive scale of the required transition toward decarbonization. Achieving a 54% reduction in emissions by 2050 will require approximately 36 billion euros in investments for port infrastructure and energy supply chains. Under an ‘industry driven’ scenario, biofuels could account for 65.5% of the energy mix, while fossil fuels like LNG maintain a 34.5% share. This transition is expected to activate 105 billion euros in production value and 45 billion euros in added value, with over half of this impact occurring in Southern Italy.

However, the report warns that failing to implement a coordinated national strategy could result in a loss of approximately 80 billion euros in added value by 2050, in addition to 11.7 billion euros in social costs related to emissions.
