In early August, a match against Atlante resulted in a confrontation between the officiating crew and the Mexico City Secretariat of Security and Citizen (SSC). Referees alleged they were blocked, insulted, and threatened with a firearm, with one official claiming an officer stated, “I’m going to shoot you.” The SSC denied these allegations, characterizing the event as a traffic-regulation dispute involving a taxi driver.

By late August, the club faced internal crisis following a 0-2 loss to Atlas, marking a third consecutive defeat. Social media footage appeared to show players ignoring interim manager Joel Huiqui while heading to the locker rooms, suggesting a fractured relationship between the squad and coaching staff. Following a title win in May, the team’s performance has declined, leaving them 12th in the standings.

Recent developments indicate deepening administrative and roster instability. Reports suggest a strained relationship between sporting director Iván Alonso and coach Huiqui, while management has reportedly tightened oversight on new signings due to previous unsuccessful investments.

Midfielder Erik Lira remains a central figure in the club’s ongoing instability. During the Apertura 2026 tournament, Lira was absent from the squad for the match against Atlas. While coach Huiqui described the exclusion as a strategic move to allow the player to “resolve his professional future in peace,” conflicting reports suggest the absence may be disciplinary due to disagreements regarding his attitude during negotiations. Lira continues to prioritize a move to Europe, specifically targeting AS Monaco, while the club also evaluates interest from English clubs. This follows his previous rejection of a $12 million offer from Al-Jazira.
