Cryptocurrency-related financial scam trends
Overview
U.S. authorities have identified significant financial losses and large-scale operations linked to cryptocurrency-based scams. The CFTC and FBI reported that losses from cryptocurrency ATM scams exceeded $388 million in 2025, a 58% increase from the previous year. These scams often target seniors through high-pressure impersonation tactics, directing victims to convert cash into digital assets via kiosks.
Expanding the scope of investigation, FinCEN linked approximately $12.7 billion in suspicious activity to digital asset investment schemes. These operations are largely traced to scam compounds in Cambodia, Laos, and Burma, where human trafficking is reportedly used to provide labor. Scammers utilize various tactics, such as ‘pig butchering’, and frequently convert proceeds into the stablecoin USDT to move funds through decentralized finance protocols or overseas exchanges.
