Peacock and A24 are developing ‘Crystal Lake’, an eight-episode horror prequel series for the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise. Created by showrunner Brad Caleb ~~Kane,~~ Kane and executive produced by original creator Victor Miller, the series is set in 1970s New Jersey and explores the origins of Pamela Voorhees and her son, Jason. The narrative focuses on the period following Jason’s drowning at Camp Crystal Lake and the psychological journey that leads to Pamela’s transformation. The cast includes Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and Callum Vinson as young Jason. The series introduces new lore elements, including a mysterious project called ‘Argonaut’ involving Bellflower Chemical and the character Elias Wittering, played by Hamish Linklater, who is revealed to be Jason’s father. Following its premiere on Peacock on October 15, 2026, the series has received a largely positive critical response, holding a Certified Fresh rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics have expressed mixed feelings regarding the storytelling and the depiction of Jason Voorhees, Linda Cardellini has received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Pam Voorhees. Recent details reveal a scientific reimagining of the franchise's mythology. The series utilizes a biological explanation for Jason’s superhuman capabilities, suggesting he was the result of genetic experimentation. Through ‘Project Argonaut’ at Bellflower, Pamela was unknowingly subjected to experiments involving cockroach DNA during her pregnancy to develop human resilience to nuclear explosions. This modification is intended to explain Jason’s exceptional strength and survival instincts, shifting the character's origins from the supernatural toward a biological framework.
