The upcoming prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’, produced by A24 for Peacock, is set to explore the origins of the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise. Set in the early 1970s, the eight-episode series focuses on Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, and her relationship with her son, Jason. The narrative centers on the tragedy at Camp Crystal Lake involving Jason’s drowning due to a lack of supervision by camp counselors. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane stated the series aims to provide depth to Pamela, whom he describes as ‘the mother of all slashers’, while revising established lore and exploring the institutional horror surrounding the camp. The series has since premiered on Peacock and Universal+. Utilizing practical effects, the production explores the psychological impact of grief on Pamela and depicts Jason’s struggles with bullying. To deepen the franchise’s mythology, the series introduces new elements, such as the ‘Argonaut project’, while maintaining familiar touchpoints from the original 1980 film.
