The Cuban Ministries of Energy and Mines and Labor and Social Security have announced that daylight saving time will be maintained until November 7, 2027. This measure prevents clocks from being set back on November 1 as originally scheduled. Authorities stated the decision is a response to an energy crisis and fuel shortages attributed to the economic blockade imposed by the United States. By maintaining the current time, the government aims to prevent an estimated 126 megawatts increase in power outages during peak demand. This includes saving 76 megawatts by reducing artificial lighting needs and gaining 50 megawatts through solar photovoltaic generation. Recent reports indicate the National Electric System is facing significant instability, with some areas experiencing daily power interruptions exceeding 20 hours. Technical issues have been identified, including a lack of necessary maintenance for 11 of the nation’s 15 thermoelectric units and unexpected turbine failures at the Antonio Guiteras plant, the island’s largest generator. To manage the impact of later sunrises, school and workplace start times will be delayed by 30 minutes between November 1, 2026, and March 14, 2027. Employers are authorized to coordinate these schedule adjustments with labor unions without affecting worker salaries. Users are cautioned that mobile devices may not automatically reflect the time change, as many smartphones rely on the IANA time zone database which may still instruct devices to revert to standard time on November 1, 2026. Users may need to manually adjust settings to UTC−4.
