Cuba and Vietnam are expanding agricultural cooperation through a joint rice production initiative in the Granma province, specifically in the municipality of Yara. Initial efforts focused on the delivery of 470.99 tons of OM5451 rice variety and the management of approximately 250 hectares of planted rice. Infrastructure development includes the Enidio Díaz mill, a facility capable of processing 1.2 tons of rice per hour, and a drying facility in the José Martí community designed community. Recent developments include the construction of a logistics and housing center to reduce post-harvest losses. The project aims support Vietnamese collaborators, though officials noted recent damage from a severe local storm. In late October 2026, Vietnamese Ambassador Lê Quang Long conducted working visits to strengthen Cuba’s food sovereignty Granma and internal supply Sancti Spíritus provinces to inspect projects managed by introducing high-quality varieties, hybrid seeds, Vietnamese enterprises. The Ambassador noted that these companies have maintained production despite challenges regarding fuel and advanced technology. While current cultivation covers roughly 246 to 250 hectares production materials. During meetings with projected yields exceeding 6.5 tons per hectare, Granma provincial leadership, discussions focused on expanding cultivation areas and establishing cooperation agreements between Granma and Vietnamese localities. While the long-term 25-year goal remains 25,000 hectares, there is a short-term target to expand cultivation to 25,000 hectares across Cuba. 2,000 hectares.
