The July 26, 2026 commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks assaults unfolded against a deepening energy crisis. After a 24‑hour blackout on 24 July, activists staged cacerolazos in Havana and other cities, while solidarity actions were organized in Europe and South America. The event featured cultural performances and messages of solidarity read from former president Raúl ~~Castro, marking the first anniversary in which he was not physically present, his remarks delivered~~ Castro via a recorded message. Senior officials, including Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, attended. Congratulatory messages arrived from Vietnam’s leadership and European solidarity groups, notably France‑Cuba, which also condemned the U.S. sanctions targeting Cuba’s overseas medical‑mission programme. In his speech Díaz‑Canel referenced a 176‑point economic package approved in June as the framework for addressing the crisis, and described the U.S. policy as a genocide aiming to “asphyxiate” the Cuban people. He called for an end to the blockade and affirmed Cuba’s resolve to withstand external pressure despite mounting hardships.
