Cuban human smuggling and money laundering conviction

Overview

A federal jury in Florida has convicted Lazaro Alain Cabrera-Rodriguez, a 28-year-old resident of Hialeah, for his role in an international human smuggling and money laundering conspiracy.

Cabrera-Rodriguez allegedly used his travel agency, Asesoria y Servicios Migratorios LLC, as a front to target Cuban nationals. The scheme charged individuals between $1,500 and $40,000 to facilitate entry into the United States, sometimes utilizing private aircraft to transport groups. To bypass immigration restrictions, the network submitted at least 600 fraudulent Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) applications by falsely claiming applicants were European citizens who had not visited Cuba since 2011.

Prosecutors established that the criminal enterprise laundered more than $20 million through 57 different bank accounts. Cabrera-Rodriguez faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
