Cuban hunger strikes by political prisoners
Overview
In mid‑July 2026, José Ramón Solano Randiche, a 13‑year‑sentence political prisoner, began a hunger strike after prison officials cancelled the leave that would have let him attend his son’s birthday. His protest was reported alongside a broader crackdown that saw dozens of demonstrators from a power‑outage protest transferred to a provisional detention centre.
A few days later the story expanded to other detainees. Independent activist Guillermo del Sol Pérez had been on a hunger strike for more than 42 days, suffering severe diabetes, hypertension, extreme weight loss and dehydration, with doctors warning of imminent collapse. In the Augusto César Sandino penitentiary, political prisoner Yaser Rodríguez González also started a hunger strike, reporting severe hepatitis and denial of medical care. Both cases underscore the worsening health of Cuban dissidents who employ hunger strikes to protest prison conditions and demand the release of those arrested after the July 11, 2021 protests.
