Cuban tourism sector luxury expansion

Overview

The military-owned conglomerate GAESA, through its tourism branch Grupo de Turismo Gaviota, announced the upcoming opening of the Playa Luxury Varadero hotel on the Hicacos Peninsula. This expansion was planned amidst significant challenges for the Cuban tourism sector, including low occupancy rates and a substantial decline in international visitor numbers compared to the previous year.

Following its scheduled launch, the Playa Luxury Varadero officially opened as a “hotel within a hotel” concept at the Playa Punta Hicacos resort. The adults-only facility features 85 rooms designed to provide personalized experiences. Cuban Ministry of Tourism officials described the initiative as a strategic effort to increase revenue and attract higher-spending visitors to Varadero. However, officials noted that previous luxury operations in other locations had been impacted by flight limitations resulting from United States sanctions.
