Cultural and civic initiatives in Alentejo

Overview

The Alentejo region continues to host various cultural, civic, and excellence-based recognition initiatives. In mid-September, the Mais Alentejo 2026 Awards concluded their voting period to recognize achievements in sectors such as culture, tourism, innovation, and society, with a gala scheduled for September 19 at Alandroal Castle.

By mid-October, regional activity expanded to include the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ) presenting the Volunteering Good Practices Awards in Évora to honor projects promoting social cohesion and solidarity. Additionally, the 3rd Biennial International of Alentejo (BIALE) was announced for 2027, focusing on the theme ‘EcoCultura’ to explore the intersection of art, environment, and rurality across several locations including Estremoz, Évora, Ponte de Sor, and Portalegre.

Sustainability and arts initiatives have further intensified in Évora. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora, in partnership with Greenvolt Comunidades, inaugurated a renewable energy community at the Recolhimento Ramalho Barahona complex, utilizing 643 photovoltaic panels with an installed capacity of 356.88 kWp. Simultaneously, the Teoartis Art Gallery is hosting the 27th International Young Art Festival, featuring artists aged 7 to 16 from 19 different countries with exhibitions in historical sites such as the Church of São Vicente and the National Museum Frei Manuel do Cenáculo.

Other regional programming includes the ALERtejo literary meeting in Elvas, centered on the theme ‘Writing the Feminine’, and the Alentejo Walking Festival along the Estrada Real in Vila Viçosa.
