Gökçeada, a Turkish island, is characterized by both its cultural heritage and its growing tourism industry. Historically, the island has served as a gathering point for the Greek diaspora to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I traditionally presides over liturgy on the island, which was notably exempt from the 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece. While regional tensions in the 1960s and 1970s impacted social life, the island maintains deep connections for former residents. In recent summer seasons, the island has also seen a significant surge in tourism. As one of the world’s ‘slow cities,’ Gökçeada attracts visitors through its diverse climates and geography. Windsurfing has emerged as a major economic driver, with surf schools hosting over 20,000 tourists, benefiting local businesses and accommodation. Currently, the island is positioning itself to compete with Greek islands by leveraging its unique geography and the ‘Imbat Wind,’ which blows consistently for approximately 300 days a year. Ali Uğur Çelik, President of the Gökçeada Tourism Association, noted that the wind quality near Tuz Gölü is particularly high for athletes because the lack of construction allows it to intensify. To expand the economic impact, efforts are underway to extend the peak tourism season from July and August into June and September through improved ferry services and various festivals.
