Skopje has initiated several projects focused on urban renewal and the promotion of local craftsmanship. Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced the restoration of historic flower shops operated by the public enterprise ‘Parqe dhe Gjelbërim – Rosa’. The project aims to reconstruct two specific locations—one on Ilinden Boulevard and another near the Ministry of Economy—to transform them into accessible spaces. The Mayor noted the cultural importance of these shops and stated that services would be offered at affordable prices. In conjunction with urban improvements, the city has hosted various cultural events centered on artisanal goods. Between October 16 and 18, the ‘Colored Autumn, Handmade’ bazaar at Skopje City Mall featured 26 modern artisans showcasing products such as filigree, ceramics, and woodwork. Simultaneously, the ‘Homemade with Love’ event at the VERO Center emphasized cultural heritage through traditional flavors and handicrafts. This included workshops where elderly participants from the Red Cross Skopje active aging program taught traditional clay modeling and knitting techniques. Further efforts to promote heritage included the ‘Rhythm of the Bazaar’ festival, which focused on the Old Skopje Bazaar. During the event, Municipality Mayor Izet Medhiti and Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski, alongside representatives from the Bazaar Esnaf, highlighted the area’s historical, social, and economic importance. Medhiti described the bazaar as one of Skopje’s most valuable assets and an inseparable part of its cultural identity. Local authorities pledged continued institutional cooperation to support traditional activities and strengthen the bazaar’s role as a cultural, touristic, and economic center. Recent initiatives have expanded to include sustainable innovation and natural traditions. The ‘Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Creativity’ event, organized by MATA Skopje as part of the European Craft2Grow project, brings together local and international experts to discuss how traditional crafts can drive the circular economy and social entrepreneurship. Additionally, the 11th Tea Festival, themed ‘The Aromatic Power of Herbs’, is scheduled for late October, featuring workshops and discussions on Macedonian and international herbal knowledge.
