Cultural events in Italy and Portugal have focused on the legacy of Niccolò Machiavelli. At the Festival del Giornalismo Culturale in Urbino, Professor Nicoletta Marcelli addressed misconceptions of Machiavelli’s philosophy, arguing that his work is often manipulated for political agendas and describing him instead as a pragmatic thinker. Looking ahead to 2027, the Fólio International Literary Festival in Óbidos plans to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Machiavelli’s death. Under the theme ‘Who tells the World?’, the festival will explore the connection between reality, appearances, and the power of words. Filipe Daniel, president of the Óbidos Municipality, has emphasized the festival’s goal of democratizing access to literature. To support this, the municipality invests approximately 500,000 euros into the event, which offers free admission. Additionally, the local government provides 20-euro book vouchers to over 1,600 municipal students and utilizes reading spaces in former churches and markets to ensure culture is not restricted to an elite audience.
