Plovdiv is hosting a series of cultural and artistic events throughout the late summer and autumn of 2026. In August, the city’s singing fountains in the City Garden featured a documentary film series titled ‘Discover Plovdiv’. Produced by BNT Plovdiv to mark its 50th anniversary, the free weekly screenings showcased the city’s historical and architectural landmarks. On August 20, the Orpheus Summer Cinema hosted Krastyu Lafazanov in ‘Polnoldie otlozhen zhivot’ (Full Moon Postponed Life), a 90-minute performance blending music, dance, and humor featuring the ‘Emotion’ dance formation and guest Nencho Ilchev. September features a dense schedule of musical and theatrical events. The Opera Open 2026 series presents Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ on September 4 and concludes with Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ on September 9. Musical performers include Lili Ivanova, Tarja Turunen, The Gathering, and Konstantinos Argiros. The International Street Art Festival ‘TheatAir 2026’ runs from September 4 to 7. The 30th edition of the ‘Scena na krastoput’ (Crossroads Stage) international theatre festival takes place from September 10 to 21, featuring productions from the Istanbul State Theatre, the Italian Mira Foundation, the National Theatre of Budapest, and various Bulgarian companies, including the premiere of Ray Cooney’s ‘English Window’. Additionally, the ‘Thracian Mysteries’ festival, organized by the Orphic Academy Association, is scheduled for September 26. This event focuses on ancient Thracian heritage through digital art by Dilyana Angelova, educational panels, and interactive performances such as ‘Mystery of the Thracian Hero’ at the Ancient Theatre. Looking ahead to October, Plovdiv will host the Miss Bulgaria 2026 grand final on October 10 at the Ancient Theatre. This move reflects a new concept of rotating the national pageant through different Bulgarian cities to highlight regional identity.
