In Rio de Janeiro, local authorities and national institutes have taken steps to protect various forms of cultural and historical heritage. In August 2026, the Rio de Janeiro City Council overturned a veto on legislation declaring the city’s hortifrutis (fruit and vegetable markets) as intangible cultural heritage. This designation recognizes these markets as essential to the urban landscape, social identity, and food security. In September 2026, the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) officially recognized the Quilombo Ferreira Diniz in the Glória neighborhood as a protected historical site. During the institute’s 114th Advisory Council meeting, the site was inscribed in the Book of Documents and Sites Holding Historical Reminiscences of Ancient Quilombos. This marks the first urban quilombo in the state of Rio de Janeiro to receive such recognition. Occupied by approximately 70 descendants of the Ferreira and Diniz families, the territory is recognized as a space for memory, community coexistence, and the transmission of Afro-Brazilian knowledge. Iphan emphasized that the recognition serves as a means of “historical reparation and identity affirmation,” extending protection beyond physical structures. The heritage listing specifically covers the entire property on Rua Cândido Mendes, including the communal courtyard and manor houses, to safeguard the site against real estate speculation. As part of the safeguarding process, Iphan intends to conduct an inventory of the community’s cultural manifestations. The site has also emerged as a local gastronomic hub, centered around the traditional feijoada served by Maria Aparecida Ferreira, known as Tia Cida.
