Cyberattack on Portuguese Defense Minister

Overview

Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo reported being the target of a cyberattack involving his mobile device while on an official mission in Athens, Greece. The attack exploited vulnerabilities in equipment that could no longer receive software updates, allowing third parties to intercept communications, duplicate his contact list, and send fraudulent WhatsApp messages in his name to request financial transfers.

Following the detection of the breach, the National Cybersecurity Center and Judicial Police implemented mitigation measures, which included replacing the minister’s device. While the Ministry of Defense has not confirmed if sensitive national defense information or personal data was compromised, the Presidency noted that government communications follow security procedures used by NATO and EU member states.

In a statement to the Assembly of the Republic, Melo described the disclosure of the incident as having a “pedagogical” purpose to warn the public about the necessity of software updates. He noted that such intrusions are not unique to him, citing similar attacks on officials in the United States, Spain, and the Netherlands.
