Cybersecurity industry gender diversity gap

The cybersecurity industry is facing growing vulnerabilities and workforce challenges. While increasing connectivity in devices like surveillance cameras and TV boxes creates new targets for global cyberattacks, experts highlight a persistent gender imbalance as a significant risk factor to industry resilience.

In Europe, new regulations are set to impose stricter data security requirements on manufacturers and distributors, yet many companies remain unprepared. Efforts to address the workforce gap include initiatives like the Swedish branch of Women 4 Cyber, which focuses on mentorship and networking.

In the Oceania region, the gender gap remains pronounced. In Australia, women represent approximately 17 per cent of the cybersecurity workforce, with many departing the field after several years due to organizational and cultural barriers. Similarly, in New Zealand, women comprise 34 per cent of ICT professionals, a figure notably lower than their 62 per cent representation in the general public service. Experts suggest that increasing female representation is a necessity for developing robust security approaches, particularly as artificial intelligence expands the landscape of potential threats.
