Cybersecurity risks of IP address exposure
Overview
Cybersecurity firm ESET has provided technical information regarding the function and security implications of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
Experts distinguish between public IP addresses, which are assigned by service providers and visible to the external internet, and private IP addresses, which identify devices within a local network and remain invisible to the outside world.
While IP addresses are essential for digital communication, security researcher Mario Micucci and other experts warn that exposure of a public IP address creates a surface of contact for cybercriminals. Potential risks include the ability for bad actors to determine a user’s approximate geographic location and service provider, as well as the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks intended to overwhelm and take a connection offline.
