Security concerns regarding public Wi-Fi networks in locations such as airports, hotels, cafes, and malls continue to be highlighted. Initial reports noted that many hotspots, particularly in Austrian cities, lack adequate encryption, leaving users susceptible to malware and man-in-the-middle attacks. Specific threats include ‘evil twin’ attacks, where fraudulent access points mimic legitimate networks to deceive users, and the interception of sensitive data such as banking information, passwords, and corporate documents. Recent research from web hosting provider TransIP indicates a high level of exposure among travelers; in the Netherlands, two-thirds of citizens use public Wi-Fi while on vacation, yet only one in eight users employs an active VPN to secure their connection. A study of 1,052 Dutch users further revealed that one in five people use public Wi-Fi for all their online activities. In addition to rogue networks, security firm ReliaQuest reported in July 2026 that attackers successfully gained administrative control over legitimate Wi-Fi gateway equipment at hotels and conference centers in several US cities. Microsoft has since issued warnings regarding a sophisticated campaign involving Russian hackers who have been systematically infiltrating wireless networks at hotels and conference centers globally since May. These attackers present fake login pages for services like Microsoft 365 or trick users into installing malicious software. To mitigate these evolving risks, security professionals recommend using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to create a secure tunnel for data transmission or opting for 4G/5G mobile data, which is generally considered more secure than public Wi-Fi. data. However, experts note that VPNs are not a universal solution: some destinations, including Belarus, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and Turkmenistan, prohibit their use, while others like Turkey have implemented provider-level blocks. Furthermore, free VPN applications may pose their own security risks.
