Konstantinos Konstantinou, president of the football club AEL Limassol, announced intentions to file a formal police complaint following a match against APOEL. The club raised concerns regarding a red card and alleged external interference with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, noting that protocol prohibits communication from production to the VAR. The Cyprus Football Association's (CFA) Referees Committee subsequently concluded an investigation into the VAR procedures used during the match. The inquiry focused on the specific procedures followed by the VAR team rather than the accuracy of the final decision. The committee noted that VAR protocols allow for an On-Field Review even after play has resumed in cases of potential offenses like spitting. Following the investigation, the Referees Committee announced it would proceed with necessary actions and sanctions where appropriate. New measures will also be implemented regarding VAR operations to ensure compliance with FIFA and IFAB guidelines and to prevent future incidents. Building on these developments, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) CFA and its Ethics and Sports Protection Committee have launched an investigation into potential match manipulation and VAR irregularities. While the Referees Committee clarified that the red card issued to player Kafou was correct according to protocol, it identified procedural flaws in how the incident was communicated and how the review was activated. In response to AEL's allegations of external interference, the Ethics Committee has opened an inquiry into possible match manipulation, which may take up to three months and could be referred to the Attorney General if criminal activity is suspected. Concurrently, the The Cyprus Referees Association (S.D.K.) has condemned the public criticism from First Division clubs, stating that personal attacks against officials have exceeded the limits of athletic ethics and are impacting the psychological well-being of referees. The S.D.K. has called on the CFA to monitor these behaviors and implement disciplinary procedures when boundaries are crossed.
