Cyprus is actively pursuing bilateral maritime and transport cooperation with various international partners. In late September 2026, Cyprus Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis highlighted the nation’s commitment to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), noting that Cyprus has integrated these provisions into national legislation to protect seafarer welfare. During this period, Cyprus also engaged with China to discuss enhancing maritime cooperation, specifically regarding maritime education, training, and coordination within the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Simultaneously, Cyprus held discussions with India to strengthen ties in connectivity, transport, and the maritime sector. These meetings, involving Cyprus’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Works and Indian High Commissioner Manish, aimed to implement strategic visions previously shared by the leaders of both nations, with a particular focus on defense and transport connectivity. On September 29, 2026, the maritime relationship between India and Cyprus progressed with the inaugural meeting of their Joint Maritime Committee (JMC) in Limassol. Held under a 2017 bilateral agreement on merchant shipping, the meeting was co-chaired by Venkatesapathy S. of India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Theodoulos Mesimeris of Cyprus’ Shipping Deputy Ministry. The committee focused on institutional dialogue regarding maritime education, training, investment opportunities, and cooperation within the IMO. Discussions also covered maritime services, shipping finance, ship repair, recycling, seafarer welfare, and green shipping. Following the JMC meeting, High Commissioner Manish met with Deputy Minister Hadjimanolis to discuss the delegation's outcomes and potential future visits by Cypriot shipping and business representatives to India. Parallel discussions were held regarding the ‘Roadmap for Bilateral Defence Cooperation 2026-31’. High Commissioner Manish met with Spyros Miltiades, Diplomatic Advisor to the Cypriot Minister of Defence, to address maritime security, search and rescue, cybersecurity, and defence industry partnerships.
