Political figures in Cyprus have proposed various legislative measures aimed at increasing government transparency and combating corruption. Kudret Özersay, leader of the People's Party, outlined a platform focused on ending secretive administrative processes. His proposals include mandating the publication of all land leasing decisions in the Official Gazette—covering agricultural, industrial, and tourism sectors—and requiring that all citizenship grants issued by the Ministry of Interior be made public. He also called for reasoned announcements regarding transportation permits. Following these proposals, Ayşe Öztabay of the Socialist Democracy Party (TDP) introduced the ‘Nereden Buldun Yasası’ (Where Did You Get It Law). This proposed legislation seeks to allow for the scrutiny of the financial status of public officials both before and after they take office. Öztabay argued that such accountability measures are necessary to restore citizen trust and uphold the rule of law through meritocracy and responsibility. In preparation for upcoming local elections on December 6 and a party congress on October 18, the TDP has further articulated its political roadmap through a ‘Good Future Vision’ strategy. Party Leader Zeki Çeler emphasized securing representation in the Assembly of the Republic and increasing local government presence. During this period, TDP officials, including General Secretary Redif Ekinci, have reinforced the necessity of meritocracy and the principle of ‘country first, then party’. Additionally, the TDP Education Committee has raised concerns regarding the institutional autonomy and stability of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) following rapid leadership changes in its Board of Trustees.
