A controversy has emerged regarding a Panhellenic School Basketball Championship semifinal held in Paphos between Elliniko College Thessaloniki and Anagennisi Patras. The match has faced scrutiny due to highly unusual officiating, specifically the awarding of 52 free throws to the winning team in a record amount of time. The Cyprus Basketball Federation (KOK) responded by stating it was not responsible for the event, as it was organized under the Ministry of Education. KOK President Louis Demetriou noted that while the federation provided one referee, the crew included two Greek officials and one Cypriot, adding that the video of the game makes the unusual nature of the free throws clear. Parents from the Hellenic College Thessaloniki Parents' Association have expressed deep disappointment and bitterness, alleging match-fixing and criticizing the perceived humiliation of officials. They highlighted the psychological impact on student-athletes and argued that the integrity of the competition, which serves as a pathway to higher education, has been compromised. The situation has escalated into a legal matter, with Greek judicial authorities investigating potential match manipulation. Six arrest warrants have been issued, including one for Vangelis Liolios, the President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK). The Parents' Association has formally called on authorities to restore academic credits and privileges to students who were denied them due to the match results, noting the significant personal and financial sacrifices made by families to support the athletes.
