Czech development of bMyVision assistive application

Overview

Czech researchers from Mendel University in Brno, the Technical University of Liberec, and TyfloCentrum are developing bMyVision v2.0, a mobile application designed to assist blind and visually impaired individuals. The app utilizes a smartphone camera to identify early signs of mold on food items, such as bakery products, and can read expiration dates via voice commands.

To improve the system’s accuracy, developers are working to expand their training database from approximately 1,400 images to a target of 10,000. The team is specifically focusing on helping users distinguish mold from other textures like sugar or flour.

Future plans for the application include expanding its capabilities to recognize human faces, Czech banknotes, and sidewalk obstacles such as pet waste. The app is expected to be released for free on the Apple Store and Google Play, with testing scheduled to begin in September.
