Czech forest drought resilience efforts

Overview

Efforts to improve forest drought resilience in the Czech Republic are being addressed through both grassroots conservation and political advocacy.

In the Volyně region, the BeetleTrees project—led by the Biological Center of the Czech Academy of Sciences and organized by the DUHA Movement—utilizes traditional management techniques to increase biodiversity. Volunteers are thinning tree crowns to reduce competition for soil moisture and leaving dead wood to create habitats for insects and fungi.

Simultaneously, the Association of Owners of Municipal, Private, and Church Forests (SVOL) is seeking formal involvement in the National Coalition for Combating Drought. Representing 21 percent of the country’s forests, SVOL reports that drought is causing significant sapling mortality, leading to high replanting costs. Chairman Jiří Svoboda has called for a holistic landscape approach and requested predictable state funding to support adaptation measures.
