The Czech Republic has initiated several large-scale campaigns to promote reading and library engagement. The ‘Čti za nároďák!’ initiative launched a nationwide tour across various cities, including Liberec, Brno, and Olomouc, to encourage reading for pleasure. This program aims to shift the perception of reading from a school obligation to a natural daily activity, utilizing forums for educators and interactive activities for children. In conjunction with these efforts, the ‘Whole Czechia Reads to Children’ campaign is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a week of activities designed to support children's emotional and linguistic development. Additionally, the 30th anniversary of ‘Library Week’ is being observed by over 400 libraries nationwide. Coordinated by the Association of Librarians and Information Workers of the Czech Republic, this event includes author readings, discussions, and the ‘Library of the Year’ awards ceremony in Prague. Recent developments show Library Week continuing with diverse programming, such as musical meetings and reading clubs. In České Budějovice, the South Bohemian Scientific Library is hosting discussions on Bob Dylan and specialized clubs for teenagers intended to make “mandatory reading less stressful.” In Ostrava, the 16th annual Reading Week for Children has launched, organized by the ‘Celé Česko čte dětem’ organization. This initiative focuses on strengthening parent-child bonds through literature, noting a trend toward picture books and emotion-centered stories. Infrastructure improvements also continue, including the reopening of the Václav Čtvrtka Library in Jičín following an 83 million CZK reconstruction, and intergenerational programs in Kyjov connecting seniors with children through technology and shared activities.
