Czech public broadcaster funding dispute
Overview
The Czech government proposed replacing the existing licence-fee system for public broadcasters Česká televize (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo) with direct financing from the state budget. In July 2026, the Czech Senate rejected this proposal, labeling it “undesirable.” Senators argued the change could reduce total funding by approximately 1.4 billion crowns, potentially cutting budgets by 15% and leading to the dismissal of 450 to 700 employees while undermining media independence.
Following these developments, the Director General of Czech Television, Hynek Chudárek, presented a crisis management plan to address anticipated revenue reductions of up to one billion CZK. The proposed austerity measures include a 350 million CZK savings target, representing a 4% decrease from the current budget. This plan involves reducing the workforce by approximately 12%, or about 350 jobs over five years, and may impact production capacities for children’s programming, documentaries, and animated content. The station may also postpone modernization projects in Prague and Brno to manage the financial strain.
