Czech Railways HVO biofuel testing

Overview

České dráhy, in collaboration with the Central Bohemian Region, is conducting a multi-phase testing project to reduce emissions on non-electrified rail lines. Following previous trials involving biofuel blends of 15%, 20%, and 30%, the project has entered a new stage involving the use of 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

The current testing phase utilizes three PESA Bydgoszcz RegioFox diesel multiple units equipped with Rolls-Royce engines at the Rakovník depot. This initiative serves as a transitional measure to lower local emissions while the railway industry works toward broader electrification and the deployment of battery-powered trains.
