The Czech Republic is holding various commemorations to mark the 58th anniversary of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. These events honor the memory of the occupation that halted the Prague Spring political reforms led by Alexander Dubček. In Olomouc, a memorial service scheduled for August 21 at the Red Church will involve regional representatives, the Army of the Czech Republic, and Palacký University. Due to ongoing renovations at the university’s Faculty of Education—where occupation forces were stationed for over two decades—the ceremony has been relocated. The service will include laying wreaths and flowers at a memorial plaque to honor those affected by the state of emergency and civilian casualties in the region. In Prague, the fifth annual NeverMore 68 festival will be held at Výstaviště Praha on August 21. Under the motto ‘Stories of those who were missing,’ the festival focuses on the hundreds of thousands of people who went into exile and the subsequent impact on Czechoslovak culture, science, and education. The program includes historical debates, exhibitions, documentary screenings, and the display of a T-55 tank. Commemorations are also occurring in Brno and Liberec. Historical accounts note the sudden arrival of troops from the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland, which aimed to end the attempt to establish ‘socialism with a human face.’ The invasion resulted in significant loss of life, with approximately 58 people killed on the first day. Modern gatherings include assemblies at the Czech Radio building in Prague and symbolic protests linking the 1968 occupation to current geopolitical tensions. Recent reports indicate that memorial services will include participation from state officials, such as President Petr Pavel.
