Czech Republic and Slovakia autumn weather patterns
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has issued forecasts indicating variable autumn weather for the Czech Republic. Initial projections suggested a cooling trend with average or slightly below-average temperatures, characterized by potential rain, showers, and possible snowfall in mountainous regions. Starting October 19, an ‘omega block’ atmospheric pattern—a high-pressure system over Scandinavia—was expected to cause weather patterns to stagnate, bringing dry weather and significant morning fog, particularly in valleys and near rivers. A mid-week warming trend was anticipated, with temperatures in Moravia and Silesia potentially reaching 20°C. However, a cold front moving across the country starting Wednesday afternoon triggered a sharp temperature decline, with daily maximums falling to between 7 and 12°C. As of October 20, this front, arriving from the southwest, brought heavy rainfall—potentially exceeding 30 mm in the northeast—and possible snow in the Krkonoše and Jeseníky mountains above 1,200 meters. In Slovakia, the front brought rain and wind gusts up to 60 km/h, with snowfall anticipated at altitudes around 1,500 meters. By October 23, the country began transitioning into a colder seasonal phase. On Sunday, October 25, clocks are scheduled to move back one hour to Central European Time. Meteorologists predict another cold front will sweep across the country on Sunday, bringing rain from west to east. While Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy with temperatures between 10 and 12°C, Sunday will see widespread precipitation and wind. In the Krkonoše and Krušné Mountains, the first snowflakes of the season may appear. Lows have already reached minus seven degrees Celsius in Volary on the Šumava plateau, and upcoming westerly winds are expected to lower perceived temperatures by approximately five degrees. In Slovakia, the end of October is marked by a rapid change in conditions, including the arrival of substantial morning frosts with valley temperatures dropping as low as -5°C.
