The Czech Republic’s Constitutional Court has issued several rulings regarding the ‘bitcoin case’, a major investigation into the donation of nearly one billion CZK in cryptocurrency to the Ministry of Justice. The Court initially ruled that the Brno Regional Court violated the rights of Tomáš Jiřikovský, a former darknet market operator, by denying his defense a fair opportunity to respond to prosecutor statements during a detention hearing. Despite this, Jiřikovský remained in custody due to existing detention orders and a new indictment. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence for Jiřikovský, which could reach up to 30 years. Subsequently, the Court rejected complaints from former Justice Minister Pavel Blažek and lawyer Kárim Titz. The defense had argued that authorities rushed proceedings to meet indictment deadlines and criticized media leaks for violating the ‘presumption of innocence’. The Court maintained that the determination of guilt remains the responsibility of the criminal court and noted that, as a public figure, Blažek is subject to significant public interest. In a recent development, Jiřikovský has officially revoked the one billion CZK bitcoin donation to the Ministry of ~~Justice.~~ Justice, citing ingratitude and the treatment of himself and his family by authorities. All accused parties deny any wrongdoing.
