Czech Republic fertility and demographic trends

Discussions regarding fertility and birth rates in the Czech Republic have spanned from historical lineage declines to modern demographic challenges. Historical investigations have examined the mysterious end of prominent noble families, such as the Rožmberk, Hradec, and Boskovice lines, during the 16th and 17th centuries due to unexplained biological or environmental factors.

In the contemporary era, the country faces a significant demographic decline. The Czech Statistical Office reported that live births reached a historical low of 77,600 in 2025, with the fertility rate falling to 1.28 children per woman. Factors contributing to this trend include economic pressures, housing accessibility, inadequate childcare, and shifting social priorities.

In response, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has proposed financial incentives to encourage higher birth rates. These proposals include a one-million-koruna reward for the birth of a second child and lifelong tax relief for families with a third child, alongside potential improvements to nursery services and support for student parents.
