Czech Republic nature conservation developments
Overview
The Czech Republic has expanded its biodiversity and habitat protection through new conservation designations and agricultural initiatives.
The Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic declared the Číhanské slatě a new nature reserve within the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area. Spanning 6.38 hectares near Teplá, the reserve protects peat bogs and wetland meadows containing some of the most well-preserved natural mineral water springs in the country. These springs, which remain undisturbed by industrial or spa extraction, support rare biodiversity such as the diatom Pinnularia ferrophila and the Otavá dragonfly. The peat bogs in the area reach thicknesses of up to eight meters, providing scientific data on landscape changes dating back 13,000 years.
In a separate development, the organization Česká krajina secured authorization to produce the first regional seed mix for the Central Bohemian region. This mix, sourced from the Milovice large ungulate reserve, is intended to restore species-rich meadows and pastures in the Polabí lowland that have suffered from intensive agriculture.
