Overview

Extreme drought in the Czech Republic has caused water levels at the Orlická and Orlík reservoirs to drop to historic lows.

At the Orlická reservoir, receding waters have exposed various debris, including metal, plastic, glass, and discarded items such as a safe, a stove, and barrels. While the appearance of sealed barrels initially caused public concern due to historical associations with the Orlické murders, police investigations determined the containers were likely empty or filled with mud and water, serving as former floats or flood-related waste.

At the Orlík Dam, water levels have dropped approximately 15 meters, reaching a historic low of 334.6 meters above sea level. This recession has revealed long-submerged historical sites, including parts of houses and the cemetery of Červená nad Vltavou. Other exposed features include the ‘Moravcovo peklo’ rock cavities used by a World War II resistance fighter, remnants of Czechoslovak fortifications such as a ‘řopík’ type A bunker, and significant sediment deposits.
