The Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party experienced significant losses during recent municipal elections in the Czech Republic. The party saw a 63.4 percent decrease in council seats, losing 348 positions, while independent SPD candidates saw a decline of 71.7 percent. The party failed to secure any seats in major cities such as Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Liberec, and České Budějovice. In response to these setbacks in both municipal and Senate elections, SPD representative and Deputy Minister of Health Karla Maříková called for the party to adopt a more assertive stance. Maříková urged members to better market their work and more forcefully advocate for party priorities, such as media financing changes and the abolition of concession fees, suggesting the party must move beyond protest to demonstrate practical results. Following these results, Vice-Chairman Radim Fiala announced a national assembly for November 8 to evaluate the party’s performance. Fiala noted that municipal mandates dropped from 492 in 2022 to 166 this year and that no SPD candidates reached the second round of Senate elections. He attributed the decline to a failure to promote core themes like migration, EU relations, and the Green Deal, as well as a lack of regional coalitions with parties such as PRO, Svobodní, and Trikolor, which resulted in split votes. The upcoming meeting will include an analysis of the results and will precede leadership elections scheduled for next year; Fiala has not yet confirmed if he will defend his current position.
